  • Laura Mvula – Sing to the Moon

Laura Mvula, a 25year old Birmingham retro soul singer with a gospel background, has produced a stunning debut album with Sing the the Moon ( released March 2013) . A mix of dreamy melodies, stomping beats, sleazy trumpet, martial drumming, striking violins and heavenly harp. Reviewers have compared her to Nina Simone,  Billy Holiday &  Janelle Monáe  but we think she  has very much her own voice and proves it with this striking original album.

  • Nouvelle Vague The Singers

    Nouvelle Vague: The Singers

Nouvelle Vague, New Wave and Bossa Nova: three things that – in their respective languages – all mean exactly the same thing. Three passions that Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux have been attempting – since 2004 – to marry together via their Nouvelle Vague project.  The group’s modus operandi is as follows: transpose classic songs and help people to (re)discover obscure new wave tracks with a fresh take, decidedly modern. This simple formula has been a huge success worldwide with hundred of thousands of records sold and six years of continuous extensive touring.  Here they present a compilation of exclusive and unreleased original songs from Nouvelle Vague main singers own projects.

The Singers showcases the singers who have thrilled crowds with their originality, sensuality and elegance over the years.  The selected songs play to the vocalists’ individual strengths and styles, straddling genres. Flitting from the melancholic seductive opener ‘Peut-Etre Pas’ (Melainie Pain) to the plinky plonky piano jazz of ‘At the moment’ (Nadeah Miranda), it is a gorgeously endearing album.  Each track creates a new mood, overlaid with exemplary vocals. In ‘Fade Out Lines’  the soft rawness of Phoebe Killdeer voice (who was allegedly kicked out of Nouvelle Vague for bad behaviour!) drifts over dripping 70’s Doors – esque instrumentals whilst the dirty urgent beats in “Private Meeting’ are echoed by Shana Halligan’s sultry teasing voice.

We think it IS all about The Singers this month.
