“Londoner Mala, producer and DJ, is one half of the dubstep duo Digital Mystikz . He discovered reggae in his teens, but it was a later fascination with drum’n’bass and jungle that opened his eyes to the all possibilities of rhythm and bass. Thanks to jungle’s love of sampling different genres, Mala was turned on to jazz, funk, and other genres which he incorporated when returning to reggae. He spent the early 2000s spinning dubstep before forming the DMZ club night, which evolved into the DMZ label. Everyone from John Peel to Gilles Peterson have showed their support with Peterson signing Mala him to his Brownswood Recordings label. Mala and Peterson went on a rhythm-finding trip to Cuba and recorded basic track with Cuban musicians, which Mala later added his unique touch. Brownswood released the results in 2012 as Mala in Cuba”
